Setup

Lie flat on your back on a firm surface. Bend your non-surgical leg so the foot is flat on the floor. Keep your surgical leg straight.

Movement

First, tighten the quadriceps of your surgical leg by pushing the back of your knee into the floor (quad set). Hold that tightness, then raise the leg to the height of the opposite knee — approximately 45 degrees. Hold for 2 seconds at the top, then slowly lower back to the floor. Maintain the quad contraction throughout.

Tip

Never lift the leg without first performing the quad set. Keeping the knee completely straight throughout protects your joint and ensures the quadriceps does the work.
