Toe Yoga
Ankle · Also called toe isolation, toe dissociation, big toe press, toe control
Setup
Sit in a sturdy chair with your bare foot flat on the floor and your knee bent to about 90 degrees. Let your heel and the ball of your foot rest on the ground with all five toes flat and relaxed. Work one foot at a time and keep your eyes on the toes — watching them helps your brain find the movement.
Movement
Press your big toe down into the floor while lifting the other four toes off the ground, and pause for a moment. Then reverse it — press the four smaller toes down while the big toe lifts. Move slowly and deliberately between the two positions, keeping your heel down and the rest of the foot still.
Tip
It is completely normal to find this hard at first — the toes may cramp, tremble, or simply refuse to separate, and that improves steadily with practice. Keep the heel and the ball of the foot on the floor so the movement comes from the toes, not from rolling the ankle. In the beginning you can hold the resting toes down with your hand, then work toward doing it hands-free.
